When people talk about offshore sailing and long distance cruising, the conversation usually revolves around boats, equipment, weather routing, navigation, and seamanship.
What is rarely mentioned is one of the most valuable assets a skipper can have: a trusted person ashore.
I like to call this person the “Shore Captain.”
The Shore Captain is not on board. They remain at home while the crew heads off across oceans, along coastlines, or even on shorter voyages. They are often a close friend, family member, fellow sailor, or sometimes a professional contact who understands both the boat and the voyage.
Despite operating entirely in the background, their contribution can be invaluable.
When something breaks and a hard to find spare part is needed, the Shore Captain can start making calls. When local regulations become confusing, they can help gather information and communicate with authorities.
When weather systems become complex, they can spend time behind a computer analyzing forecasts from multiple sources and provide an additional perspective.
In an emergency, their value increases even further.
They know your plans. They know your route. They know who to contact and what information is needed. While the crew may be focused on managing a situation at sea, the Shore Captain can coordinate support from land, often far more efficiently than those directly involved.
Even on relatively short voyages, having someone ashore who understands your plans and can act on your behalf provides an extra layer of security and confidence.
What surprises me is how little attention this role receives.
We regularly discuss safety equipment, communications systems, and emergency procedures, yet we rarely acknowledge the person who may ultimately become the most important link in the chain when things don’t go according to plan.
Throughout my own sailing activities, I have always made sure I had a Shore Captain I could rely on. Someone I could call for advice, assistance, logistics, research, or simply a second opinion. Time and again, that support has proven its worth.
A good Shore Captain may never set foot on your boat during the voyage.
Yet they can be one of the most important members of the crew.
