Anchor

Anchor is one of the oldest tools in seafaring, designed to keep a vessel fixed in place by gripping the seabed.

Early anchors were little more than heavy stones, but over centuries they developed into iron hooks and, eventually, the familiar fluke-style designs we see today.

There are many types of anchors: the classic Admiralty pattern with long arms, the lightweight Danforth, the versatile plough anchor, and modern high-holding-power versions used on yachts and ships alike. Each type balances holding strength with ease of handling.  

Sailor’s note: The anchor appears on ancient Roman coins as a symbol of maritime strength.
