Collection: Mooring Buoy

A mooring buoy is a floating marker anchored to the seabed, designed so boats can tie up securely without dropping their own anchor. They’re convenient in busy harbors and environmentally friendly, since they prevent repeated anchoring damage to the seabed.

Many boaters trust them because they’re installed and maintained by marinas or harbor authorities. Still, not every buoy is equal - poorly maintained ones may have worn chains or weak ground tackle, so it’s wise to inspect before relying on them.

Compared with using your own anchor, a mooring buoy can be quicker and safer in crowded or protected waters, but your own anchor gives you full control in remote areas.

Sailor’s note: The bright colors and patterns on mooring buoys aren’t just decoration — in many countries, different colors indicate whether the buoy is private, public, or reserved for specific types of vessels.
